The historic State Lane Vineyard, in the heart of the Napa Valley, was first leased by Beringer Estates in 1972 from the McClaskey Family. In 1979, Beringer Estates began bottling the State Lane Cabernet Sauvignon as a single vineyard designated wine. The remaining grapes were used to launch the now famous Beringer Estates Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon program. State Lane remained the cornerstone of the Private Reserve wine until 1999 when phylloxera destroyed the vines.

The Kapcsándy Family – Lou, Bobbie and son Louis Jr. – purchased the property in May, 2000. The plan was to redevelop the vineyard based on Beringer Estates direction. Beringer Estates had agreed to purchase all of the grapes for their Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines. This vineyard was known to us for many years from Beringer's winemaker Myron Nightingale, who made the wines. He was succeeded by the current winemaker Ed Sbragia. The wines from State Lane vineyard continued to be highly sought after. The 1995 State Lane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded 95 points by the Wine Spectator as the top Cabernet Sauvignon in California. Robert Parker has consistently rated the wines at 90-plus points.

We conducted a comprehensive investigation of our soils profile, physical properties, soils chemistry, geological formation and drainage. To our amazement and pleasure, we discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions. We have great respect, admiration and love for this very special land in the heart of Napa Valley, and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential.
