Balanced yet not real complex but really quite good and easy drinking.

100 points, Wine Enthusiast

June 2003

If a wine can ever be perfect, this is as perfect as wine can get. Right from the beginning this was the wine of the vintage, and nothing has changed. Margaux was the last of the first growths to be bottled because it just needed that extra time in barrel. The wine now has huge intense black cherry and blackberry fruits, marvellous tannins that are sweet and powerful. To finish, the magnificent Margaux perfume of sandalwood and ripe fruit dominates, leaving an impression of finesse and power.

100 points, Wine Spectator

July 2003

Muscular yet classy. Breathtaking aromas of black licorice, violets, berry and cherry, with light hints of spices and minerals. It's all there in the nose. Full-bodied, with an ultrafine tannin structure and a finish that goes on for minutes...

92 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

February 1997

Both the 1989 and 1990 wines were consistent with past tastings. The 1990 is a deeper wine, with a saturated ruby/purple color exhibiting no amber. The wine offers up copious aromas of grilled meat, blackcurrants, cedar, and sweet oaky scents. Full-bodied, with moderate tannin, immense concentration, thickness, and richness, this low acid yet structured wine should reach full maturity by the end of the century, and drink well for 10-15 years.

93 points, Wine Spectator

August 2000

A very fine wine. Medium ruby-garnet color. Raspberry, mineral, berry and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a silky texture. Long finish. Best ever from this estate?--1990 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2004. 8,500 cases made

I took this on a recommendation as a replacement for the River Road organic CS, which was out of stock, but it is not as good. The River Road was so good that I "forgot" to write a review of it. This has a nice measure of restraint and refinement. 89 Points The Wine Spectator

25% Merlot. Smelling variously of ripe berries, toast and dusty earth spice, but a bit loose in clear varietal focus just now and blunted by formidable tannins, this bottling starts out fairly well but dries at the end, and it demands patience without any clear assurance of beauty. 1 Puff Connoisseurs' Guide
