Ampelos Rose of Syrah (Santa Ynez Valley) 2004
An intense pink. Not much on the nose. Crisp and correct. Refreshingly light. Indeterminate berry flavors that prompt no particular flavor association. Good quaffer for a supper of cold beef sandwiches and corn salad on a hot summer night. Grade: B-

Hitching Post Pink Pinot (Santa Barbara County) 2005
This wine has been in my cellar since last fall and perhaps it would have shown better when first purchased. At age 1.5, however, it offers mainly crisp acidity. There's also some muted flavors of cranberry and lemon, but so what? Grade: C
