Dutschke St. Jakobi Shiraz 2002
This lovely australian wine is worth a comment! It has an intense aroma with cherry, liquorice, mocca and a touch of vanilla. It's full-bodied with mature fruit, soft tannins and a super harmonious and complex taste. The wine is rich,...
Wine Australia 2006
Wine Australia, the biennial exhibition of Australian wine and wine related products has come and gone and after four days of tasting over 400 wines, I’m taking a little break from drinking for a few weeks!
Overall, I thought the event was excellent - although there is still some room for improvement. I’m going to quickly make a few comments about some of the positives and some of the problems...

Devils Lair Fifth Leg Rose 2006
This is from various bits of Western Australia and is made from merlot, shiraz and cabernet. The press blurb says that it is the 5th biggest selling rose in Australia. I’ll have to work out what the other four are now. I am, of course, a Mateus man myself!
Aromas of cherry/red berries and roses. Not sweet smelling and there are some garlicy sulphide characters lurking near the fruit bowl too...
Ay Yalumba!
Yalumba’s Y Series 2005 Viognier comes from Australia’s oldest family owned winery, in South Australia. I often hear that people choose New World wines over European ones because the names are easier to say. This may be an exception. Yalumba have pioneered the use of screwtops on wines so it’s not surprising that this has one. The wine is a bright yellowy green with thick legs. It smells fresh...
